Feb. 19, 1999 Nestor upsets Philippoussis in third-set tiebreaker
SportsLine wire reports
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Unseeded Daniel Nestor of Canada upset defending champion Mark Philippoussis in the third round of the $700,000 St. Jude Indoor tournament Thursday night, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (12-10).
From 10-10, Philippoussis put a forehand into the net, then lost when he netted a backhand. The victory sends Nestor into a quarterfinal matchup Friday against John van Lottum of the Netherlanders, who eliminated another Australian, Todd Woodbridge, 6-4, 6-4. IN OTHER MATCHES, sixth-seeded Mariano Puerta defeated Richey Reneberg 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; Jim Courier stopped Laurence Tieleman 6-7 (7-5), 7-5, 6-1; top-seeded Todd Martin downed Kenneth Carlsen 7-6 (7-3), 6-2; Jan-Michael Gambill beat Scott Draper 6-3, 7-6 (8-6); No. 3 Tommy Haas downed 13th-seeded Ramon Delgado 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, and No. 12 Andrew Ilie beat Jiri Novak 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Martin, stretched to three sets in his second-round match Tuesday, had 23 unforced errors Thursday against Carlsen. Martin blamed his problems on playing too passively. "It's always been the case that the more aggressive I am, the better I hit the ball," said Martin, a two-time champion of the tournament sponsored by Kroger. Martin, who is 11-1 in match play this year, used his big serve to stop Carlsen in the tiebreaker. Trailing 2-1, he served up three aces to put away the set. He didn't let Carlsen get that close again as he broke him twice in the second set. Carlsen hurt himself by doublefaulting in each of those games. "I've had to really work hard to beat the players that I've beaten the last few months. It just so happens that when nip comes to tuck, I've played a little bit better," said Martin, whose last title came in Sydney, Australia last month. COURIER, WHO UPSET fourth-seeded Michael Chang on Wednesday, blew a 3-1 lead in the first set against Tieleman. But the American broke back to avoid another tiebreaker in the second set and raced out to a 4-0 lead in the third set. "We were in a bit of a dog fight until I broke it out in the third set," said Courier, who currently is ranked 69th.
