Jan. 24, 1999 Enqvist ousts Philippoussis, faces Rosset in quarters
SportsLine wire reports
MELBOURNE, Australia -- Sweden's Thomas Enqvist saw off a late challenge from big-hitting local boy Mark Philippoussis at the Australian Open on Sunday to claim a 6-2, 6-4, 6-7, 4-6, 6-2 fourth-round victory.
Enqvist, who defeated Australia's U.S. Open champion Patrick Rafter in the third round, also dominated in the groundstrokes and served for the match at 5-4 in the third set. But Philippoussis finally found his range and it appeared that the Swede had run out of winners as the Melbourne-born star took the next two sets. IN THE FIFTH SET, ENQVIST rediscovered his killer instinct, breaking the Australian in the sixth game and again in the eighth to book a quarterfinal berth against Switzerland's Marc Rosset. Rosset blazed into the quarterfinals with a resounding 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win over unseeded Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic. Rosset blasted Ulihrach off an outside court at Melbourne Park, serving 12 aces during a 83-minute third round match. Switzerland's Rosset, who won the gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, completely dominated the match against Ulihrach, who is ranked three places below Rosset at 34 in the world. Ulihrach was unable to break Rosset's serve but lost his own serve four times. Unseeded Rosset knocked sixth seed Tim Henman of Britain out of the season-opening Grand Slam tournament in the third round. The Swiss right-hander had never made it past the fourth round in seven previous appearances in Melbourne but reached the semifinals of the 1996 French Open. |
