Rios' effortless groundstrokes won him the match from the baseline, as Gambill struggled to keep up.

Rios will next play 18-year-old Australian Lleyton Hewitt, who ousted Dutchman John Von Lottum 6-4, 6-2.

"If I can get him behind the ball I will have no trouble," Rios said, adding that power shots would be key to beating Hewitt. "I have a little more power than him. I'm really feeling good, hitting the ball really clean."

Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan, 20, continued his surprising run as he upset sixth-seeded Australian Andrew Ilie 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, (7-3).

The victory gave Srichaphan a semifinal match against Swede Mikael Tillstrom, his first ever on the ATP tour. Tillstrom advanced with a 7-6 (7-4) 4-6, 6-3 victory over Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic.

"So many net cords helped me to win," Srichaphan said. "I'm so surprised."

"It was a pretty close match," Ilie said. "The difference in the end was that he was very lucky. He was really lucky on a lot of shots."
